Activities

Once here, you could be forgiven for just settling in and letting the world pass you by! If however, you would like to add a little more activity to your holiday, we can organise any number of leisure activites for you. The Snowy Mountains is renowned not only for it's fabulous skiing, but also mountain biking, bush walking, fishing and general sightseeing.

The myriad of bird life including cockatoos, galahs, blue wrens and eagles makes a stay at Eagles Range a birdwatchers paradise. Head off for a walk, ask for a picnic to be provided, and see natives such as echidnas, kangaroos and wallabies along with plenty of rabbits, wild deer and even the occasional fox! Greg and Carol are also eager to help you explore our beautiful region and are always available to help plan your activities.

Well known for being home to Australia's best snow sports, it is outside this peak season the mountains shake off the snow to expose their real beauty. Spectacular peaks, clear mountain streams and the clean, crisp high country air provide a brilliant backdrop for your holiday. In the warmer months, when fields of wildflowers bloom, you can become snap-happy on horseback in the high plains or enjoy the impressive scenery on a bushwalk along the rooftop of Australia.

Melting snow generates a surge for white-water rafters, trout fill the streams and the vast lakes offer great water skiing or the outlook for the perfect picnic. We are located less than a 15 minute drive to Jindabyne with movie theatre, shops, galleries, restaurants and services, not to mention Lake Jindabyne which provides a picturesque venue for a variety of water sports

Fishing

Imagine this, fishing on Lake Jindabyne watching one of those famous Snowy Mountains sunsets and amazingly enough, actually catching a fish. For some of us the chances of catching a trout are slim to none. That's where expert fisherman and Jindabyne legend Mark Duffy can help. Mark and his Lake Jindabyne Foreshore Fishing business can practically guarantee you a catch or at the very least a good time trying.

Mark has twelve years experience taking school and family groups as well as senior citizens on fishing excursions. He can help a beginner fisherperson learn to tackle up, cast, and hook a mouthwatering trout, while for the more experienced fisherperson Mark can escort them to exactly where the fish are biting and tell them what bait or lure to use.

Mark says he wouldn't call his fishing trips an adventure - more like a relaxing pastime where people can relax, watch the sun rise or set over the water, catch a fish or two, have a barbecue and take in the surrounds. Lake Jindabyne Foreshore Fishing is more than happy to take requests for stream fishing or fishing in other Snowy Mountains Lakes.

Catering for groups of up to twelve, Mark is also pleased to take just one person on a fishing expedition. Everything is provided including transport, rods, tackle, bait and lures. Fishing is great here all year round. The trout season runs from October to June each year in the mountain streams while Lake Jindabyne is open all year round.

A stay at Eagles Range can offer you activities to keep non fishermen occupied and happy while the others fish!

Walking

At 2228 metres, Mount Kosciuszko is the highest mountain on mainland Australia. It was named in 1840 by the Polish geologist and explorer Count Paul de Strzelecki in honour of General Tadeusz Kosciuszko, a Polish patriot and freedom fighter. Strzelecki said the name occurred to him because he was "amongst a free people who appreciate freedom".

Some 30,000 people make the trek to the summit of Mount Kosciuszko each year. Until 1974 it was possible to drive a car up there - but today the only way to reach the top is to walk, or in winter, to ski.

Most people walk from either Charlotte Pass on the Summit Walk or from Thredbo on the Kosciuszko Walk, which links up via a chairlift ride from Thredbo. The Kosciuszko Walk features a $800,000 elevated walkway made of steel mesh that lets sunlight reach the vegetation below.

One of the most popular day walks is the 22km circuit known as the Main Range Walk. This takes in all four glacial lakes, as well as offering dramatic views of Mount Sentinel and Watsons Crags. The Crags, formed from an outcrop of metamorphosed sedimentary rock dating back 450 million years, plummet off the western face of Mount Twynam. They present a jagged contrast to the rounded granite peaks that dominate the range.

In January and February, the gorgeous wildflowers of the alpine area bloom. Shades of white, yellow, purple and orange scatter the landscape. The walk to Mount Kosciuszko is suitable for most ages and fitness levels - just ensure you prepare properly and take water and waterproof clothing ... and don't forget your camera!

Greg and Carol will be happy to provide detailed walking instructions for many wonderful walks where you'll take in some of the country's most impressive scenery.

Snowy Hydro

A visit to one of Snowy Hydro's hydroelectric power stations is a must. The sheer scale of the project has deservedly taken on legendary status and is a jewel in the crown of the nation's post war development.

The Scheme is one of the engineering wonders of the modern world. With seven power stations, two of which are underground, 16 major dams and over 140 kilometres of transmountain tunnels it is a symbol of Australian endeavour at its best.

The Snowy Scheme, which covers an area of 3200 square kilometres, was built over a period of 25 years by a multi-cultural workforce that numbered more than 100,000.

The Snowy Hydro's Information Centre in Cooma provides information about the scheme and assists visitors in planning their itineraries. Their toll free phone number is 1800 623 776 or simply visit www.snowyhydro.com.au.

Snow Skiing

The Snowy Mountains offers many fantastic resorts where you can enjoy worldclass skiing facilities and accommodation. The four highest peaks in Australia are in the Snowy Mountains and so is the best snow. There are over 230 kilometres of groomed trails from beginners to championship and cross country skiing is also a delight here.

The resorts are within our famous Kosciusko National Park only a 40 minute drive from Eagles Range. The season officially runs from mid June until early October.

Our world famous snowfield resorts are Thredbo and Perisher Blue incorporating Perisher Valley, Smiggins Holes, Guthega and Mount Blue Cow. All offer friendly hospitality, spectacular scenery and great skiing! We are able to extend a discounted ski hire through local ski hire company, Eiger.
